Two Chemises 1850-1870
Chemises or 'shimmie' were worn throughout the nineteenth century next to the body. The corset was put over this calf-lenght garment, which protected it from sweat and body odours. Romantic Era Dress
This pattern is for a full Romantic Era dress, designed from fashion plates of 1832. This style is suitable for the years 1830 - 1836. Fitting at the point of the shoulder, this dress can be worn for both day and evening wear, depending on sleeve choice. The evening sleeve is a pouf Beret sleeve, and the day sleeve is a full Gigot sleeve with hooks at the wrist. The bodice reaches to the waist and can be straight around, or with a shallow point in front. The front and back have gathered upper sections, over a fitted lining. The bodice can also be made plain, if desired. A full skirt is attached to the bodice, and is ankle length. The closure is in the center back, with hooks and eyes. Each size is hand drawn, not scaled, with all of the bodice seams true to the era. This bodice is designed to fit snugly over a corset. 1835 Afternoon Costume This dress is constructed in the large sleeve-style of the 1830s known as gigot. The full, ankle-length skirt is attached to a separate high-waisted bodice with hooks and eyes. Based on an original costume of brown watered silk and worn over full petticoats, which is in the possession of the Wisconsin Historical Society. The Package includes patterns for bodice, skirt, and perlerine (a scarf-like cape). It is part of WHS' discontinued pattern line which won't be reprinted, once the last copies are gone. Lady's Wrapper or Morning Gown 1855-1865 Extant wrappers range in design and material from conservative to lavishly extrovert and colorful. Some wrappers were made from exactly the same fabrics as regular dresses, cut like a dress in the back and sides. With the help of a belt such wrappers could be made to look just like a regular dress. Others were made from paisleys and other "loud" fabrics, with a bold contrasting panel or trim in the front, or with a cut that was loose all the way around. Details The original wrappers this pattern is based on were cut in the back as a regular dress and only the loose front panel mark them as wrappers. Early 1860s Day Dress
This pattern features 3 different sleeve styles, undersleeves and collar option. (Click image for additional views!) All Views have a two dart front bodice and a classic curved V, tucked back. The darts are boned. The front of the skirt is directionally knife pleated, the sides are box pleated and the back is cartridge pleated (gauged). The bodice, sleeves, and skirt are flat lined with polished cotton. The skirt has a pocket and is stitched to the bodice. The bodice has piping at the neck, armscyes and waist. The Going-Away Dress of Charlotte Brontė
The pattern is taken from the pretty dress which Charlotte Brontė wore on the 29th June, 1854, when she left Howarth with her new husband, Arthur Bell Nicholls, on their way to Ireland for their honeymoon. The dress is now owned by the Brontė Parsonage Museum, Howarth, which is associated with this production. The pattern is drawn to scale on squared paper so that they may be scaled up or down according to requirements. Semi-fitted jacket that hangs open in the front, usually worn over a blouse. It is slightly short of the waist in length. The main body is in three pieces, Back, Side Back, and Front. A wonderful bodice fashionable between 1841-1847. It may also be worn for 1850s gowns because daguerreotypes abound of women wearing the fan-front bodice in the 1850s. The illusion of a small waist is created with tucks at the shoulders which are drawn into shirring at the center front waist. The bodice is mounted on a form fitting lining. The lining alone may be used as a pattern for a popular variation from the fan-front. The long form fitting sleeves may be made with or without a cap. This skirt is an original design based on elements and ideas in use during the 1850's and 1860's. The top skirt is pulled up in swags, revealing a box pleated ruffle underneath.
