Vest Basque 1872
This bodice is designed from a garment as shown in the November 23, 1872 issue of Harper's Bazar Magazine. The longer, layered look below the waist lend the term "Basque" to this bodice. Many similar bodices where shown throughout 1872 and on into 1875. It has a simulated "vest" portion in the center front, closing with buttons to the waist, and diamond-shaped neckline framed with a rolled collar. The back has a tail with a pleat at each side-back seam. The side-backs are loose below the waist and overlap the back tail. The fitted sleeve is in 2 pieces, and has a wide cuff. Polonaise 1873 This is a polonaise with a basque back, i.e. the back has an upper bodice section overlapping a lower section with poufs. The front buttons to the waist and then falls open into two points, with pleats at the sides. As an option, the buttons can be extended down the front to give a round apron effect. This style was very popular in the early 1870's. The sleeve is a full length pleated bell. Two neckline options are given. This pattern is recommended for intermediate to advanced sewers. Ball Gown Basque Bodice 1875
This bodice fits just off the shoulder for evening wear. It has an extended waist, pleated basque, and a point in front. The closure is in the center front, with either buttons or hooks and eyes. The ball gown sleeve is a small pouf. This style is particularly suited to 1870 - 1876, but can be used for other periods as well. This skirt is drafted based on a tailoring method actually used in the 1870's. It is designed to be worn with an overskirt or polonaise, and bustle TV101 or TV108 (see Underwear 1870-1915). The full skirt is flat in front with gathers or pleats in back, with the extra fullness shifted to the back. It has the traditional five gores and a full width in back. An optional 12" ruffle can be added to the hem. This skirt is suitable for just about everything. It can be left plain for day wear, or elaborately trimmed for evening. 1870s Tie-Apron Overskirt This apron is drafted based on an actual garment as seen in an 1872 pattern catalog. It is designed to be worn with an underskirt and petticoat TV101 or TV108 (see Underwear 1870-1915). The apron is flat in front , and has wide sashes that tie over the bustle and hang down the back. This style works well if worn with a bodice that has a long basque behind to cover the tie. Suitable for a nice visiting skirt, or with elaborate trimming, would make a nice ball gown overskirt. 1873 Side Drape Overskirt This skirt is drafted based on an actual garment as seen in an 1872 pattern catalog. It is designed to be worn with an underskirt (like TV201) and petticoat TV101 (see Underwear 1870-1915). The apron is lightly swaged in front with pleats at the side seam. The side back has pleated drapes hanging loosely down the side of the bustle. Two sashes hang from the enter back.. The closure is in the center back. This overskirt would look especially nice over a poufed underskirt, without the back sashes, and is suitable for a nice visiting skirt, or with elaborate trimming, would make a nice ball gown overskirt. Trained Skirt Ensemble
These skirts are drafted based on a tailoring method actually used in the 1870's. It is designed to be worn over bustle TV101 or TV108. Skirt A has the traditional five gores and two widths in back for train length. The full overskirt is pulled up in the center back and has four sashes hanging down the back. Skirt B has the five gore front and a double width back, pleated at the side back for a "pouf." The front apron is also pleated on the sides for gentle swags. 1875 Parisian Trained Skirt
This skirt is drafted based on an actual garment as seen in a photograph taken in 1875, in Paris. The skirt base is the traditional 5 front gores and full back. The front has two swags, one high and one low on the skirt. The sides are trimmed with vertical ruches simulating a separate panel. The back can be made either bouffant or flat, with a very full train added. The original dress was of a plaid silk, but anything will look nice. 1874 Dinner Dress
This design has many of the typical features of an early 1870s dress including a tight-fitting, short-waisted bodice with peplum and coat sleeves, a bustled apron-style overskirt, and a skirt with straight front and full back. The original in the possession of Wisconsin Historical Society was made from bright blue silk faille and trimmed with dark blue velveteen and white satin. Talma Cape
A talma is a kind of mantle, or wrap, that was very popular during the 1870's and 1880's. It has a fitted back, held in place by a hidden belt around the waist, with pleats to fit over a bustle. The front is loose in a moderate point. The "sleeve" falls in long points on the sides, with ample room to lift your arms without disturbing the hem of the mantle.
